Statistics Facing Women in the Greater Memphis Area

52.3% of our population is female.1

Within Shelby County, about 40% of women who gave birth within the past 12 months had less than or equal to a high school diploma. About a third had completed some college, and about 25% earned a bachelor's degree of higher. 2

42.2% of children under six are living with only a mother.2

Over the past few years, the teen birth rate has declined both in the state of Tennessee and in Shelby county, though it remains higher in Shelby County than in the state - and in the nation. 2
